“People talk about discipline, but it’s so hard to execute. HM Payson studies behavioral economics to give our clients an edge. We can help humans become better investors.”

David Hines has worked in the financial industry since 1993. Prior to Payson, he spent 10 years in Boston as an investment manager and on a bond trading desk; and before that, he worked in the Army, stationed in Germany as a communications officer in an artillery unit. He was drawn to Maine in 2003 because of the opportunity to join HM Payson – a firm that stood out to him for its entrepreneurial environment and investment rigor.

David credits his previous bond work and his MBA – which he earned while working in the industry – with his deep understanding of how to determine the intrinsic value of stocks and bonds. He enjoys conducting research to uncover how businesses, particularly those that Payson owns for its clients, create value for shareholders and society.

In his role today, David helps to oversee the research team and optimize its processes and relationships with data vendors. He’s the same way with portfolio management – always looking to upgrade the investment characteristics of a portfolio and marry them with each client’s unique needs.

On any given day, you might find David conducting research, optimizing data, or talking with clients about what HM Payson is doing and why. He has been known to uncover new investment ideas that are misunderstood by the market, and is skilled at turning them into investment theses that can be clearly explained to a client in less than 30 seconds.

David lives in Kennebunk with his wife and three kids. When he’s not at the office, you might find him taking the family to visit historical sites such as Mount Vernon and Plymouth Colony, in the stands at his two boys’ hockey games, or at one of his daughter’s many performances. An avid hiker, fisherman, and golfer, David tries to play at least five new golf courses a year, with the eventual goal of playing every course in Maine.
