"There's a culture here of respect, positivity, and being a part of something bigger than our primary responsibilities. It's infectious, motivating us to do more, and that translates into happier clients."

Mark Doehla brings over two decades of experience in fixed income investment management, research, strategy, and trading to his role at HM Payson. A native of Connecticut, Mark has lived in several east coast cities, most recently Stowe, Vermont.

In his previous role at National Life Group, Mark served as Vice President, Senior Investment Strategist, and Senior Credit Research Analyst, focusing primarily on investment-grade and high-yield corporate debt. Before that, he was a Senior Research Analyst and Trader in investment grade corporate bonds at Allianz of America, and spent years at UBS in equity and credit research roles.

While Mark’s current focus is bonds, he started in equities and has always appreciated the different lenses investors gaze through to analyze risks and returns depending on the asset class. And his experience on both the sell and buy sides of the investment field has enriched his ability to build working relationships. Finally, having worked at firms with very different investment mandates, he knows that there is never a one-size-fits-all investment solution.

At HM Payson, as the Director of Fixed Income & Trading, he is responsible for ensuring that clients understand the value of fixed income as a powerful tool in any investment environment, and for leading the balance of fixed income asset class exposure across accounts. Sharing the trading floor with his equity counterparts keeps the flow of information and ideas fresh and overarching; and he enjoys the uphill battle of convincing his colleagues that bonds are exciting!

Off the Clock

When Mark is not being careful with client portfolios, you’ll find him amping up risk in downhill mountain biking and free skiing. He’s also a big fan of sci-fi movies/books and a quietly enthusiastic yet fiercely dedicated sidelines/bleachers supporter of high school varsity girls’ tennis, field hockey, and boys’ lacrosse. Mark and his family, which includes his wife, three teenage/young adult children, and their Netherland Dwarf bunny, currently live in Stowe, Vermont and are in the process of relocating to the Portland area.
